Note: I'm rating this four stars because I haven't even gotten the lens yet, but I want to make the point that, after some pretty exhaustive online research to try to confirm this, it LOOKS like Sigma is now making the Sony version of this lens WITH HSM. You can't believe how difficult it has been trying to find two sites that agree on this, but as far as I can tell, Sigma's press releases in a few places tout the new DG version of this lens as having HSM for all the usual suspects, and "Konica Minolta" (i.e. Sony) as a compatible HSM lens. I'll try to provide more information on the lens itself when it actually arrives (notably, I want better information about shooting with this lens in a sports capacity. There are maybe 20 people in the country who are able to make a living shooting sports as their specialty, but it would be really nice to include an ability to shoot night-time high-school football with this pup as a newspaper stringer, to help justify buying the thing).

I like this lens except for the miss leading discription on the lens .... It does not have the HSM for the Sony Digital SLR camera. But the price is the same for it as the other major brand digitals Nicon-Canon? Why do I have to pay the same price for something it doesn't have.... ???? I would like an answer ...please and adjustment on the price I paid. I called Amazon but they haven't replied back? Something to concider when buying this lens. Also it is heavy and doesn't have a really snug fit.

I have been nothing but impressed with this lens its great at 50mm and all the way to 500mm I find the auto focus speed just fine even with out the hsm (high speed motor) on the Sony version with my a350 and a300. And I was able to take good photos even at 500mm hand held in good sunlight. Just a good all around lens the only draw back is the weight but it has a good handle to carry it with and I did not find it unmanageable on my last motorcycle trip (no room for tripod) and was able to take some great shoots of scenery as well as some great bird close-ups. I definitely recommend it if you want a nice all around lens and don't mind a little weight.
