Number one greatest thing about this tripod: It's a Gitzo! No it is not carbon fiber. But it is not aluminum either. It is basalt and it is light (not as light as the cf - but almost) and has the latest features from Gitzo on their CF tripods: G-Lock, anti-leg rotation, etc. When I first got it, I loved the light weight, but thought it might be a little unsteady. So I kept the my two heavy veteran aluminum Bogen's within reach in case I needed them. The other day I was shooting some hummingbirds with a Canon 5d, 400mm lens with 2 extension tubes on the Gitzo GT2941. I placed my 25 lb camera bag on the retractable center column hook. Wow! this thing became as rigid as my 15 lb Bogen tripod! I use a Acratech Ultimate Ball Head on top of the tripod. That keeps the weight down. The tripod comes with a carrying bag. These basalt tripods are Gitzo's best kept secrets. Go ahead and spend your money on a carbon fiber. But for a few ounces more and a whole lot less greenbacks you can have a tripod that functions just as well and looks just as good.
